There are plans to revive the old magic that once lighted the way and transcended all ethnic barriers. Mostly it was just a bunch of guys who enjoyed the mutual company and the very simple pleasures of the game. It is never easy to construct something from scratch, much less to re-construct something from the remnants of a once undeniable fortress. Sometimes, its just no longer possible to remove the tarnish from that old trophy...but that also means you'll just have to get a new one! All i'm saying is, selectively recruiting players and developing them isn't gonna be easy but all dreams and visions need something to spark it off. For the once old greats of the original SixPack, wish us luck in trying to relive the dream and result of 2006...and then add another 10 tries to that.

Looking at the numbers, with some allowance for transient movements in and out of the team, we don't really have much to leverage on. Looks like times ahead is going to be tough, along with having to bring the new members up to speed. But still a start nevertheless...slowly but surely.

First 3 words when i started playing a training game - DIE DIE DIE!

Everyone was so quick! There was no game plan per se but we were all in sync when it comes to bringing the ball up to the 5 metres. The moves evolves around simple sub-units - switches, bump, wrap, fade and dump and off course long passes. Nothing fancy honestly.

DIE DIE DIE - I was literally staggering on the field panting, fitness lacking, knees buckling, chest tightening, glutes cramping but NO, i shall not go down defeated. Excuses are for losers..i shall persevere..

When longs are read.

Longs are quite useful if perfected, but can be neutralized as any other play. Thats where flexibility, MORE available options, and decision making is crucial. And it is also with these factors of somewhat non transferrable qualities that underpin competitive advantage.

Both mids run a long with l.a.mid receiving quick ball off the ground to the left. The r.a.mid works off the ball to the right. Assuming defending mids were ready to man-up instead of being caught, long wouldn't be effective.

In the game, r.a.mid receiving long ball steps back in-field, with l.a.mid staying on inside shoulder of l.d.link (it is also worth noting that the l.a.mid kinda took a step back before taking the touch. I assume this is to make the l.d.link to run up a little bit more or perhaps just trying to get behind the ball. Nevertheless, small little step but it's always the 1 %ers that results in a try). This left the l.d.mid planted, as r.a.mid changed direction (fyi both d.mids are on the ball carrier at this point!). Now, left d.link will have no choice but to collapse in for his a.mid. If you remember my last post on the "stanton" play, the kiwis have done quite exactly the same thing in this case. And if you remember claiming that players at domestic level never run up hard to collapse in, this actually proves that "stanton" can still work w/o a good collapse defence. It all took a religious shifting defence which forced the d.link into that position to make that touch. So, l.a.mid takes the touch on l.d.link and r.a.mid passes the ball as acting half resulting in a try by l.a.link. The d.wing is caught out by the a.wing with l.d.link unable to get to the ball carrier in time.

What the kiwis did was to exploit aus drifting defence to set up for a second phase play. In this case they went left with a quickie, long right, and back to left for a "stanton" or second phase play. So as i was saying, creating more options will give us more flexibility to our advantage, and also to deal with 'smart' defenders or those that have learned to evolve. Basically, a long and stanton should do. Of course we also need to consider whether defenders drift as a unit and also if they are trained to collapse. Same set up, different options.

The Trans-Tasman series signifies the interrelationship that exists between New Zealand and Australia. The term is originated from the Tasman Sea that separates the two countries. This year, both rival teams will be participating in two legs: one that was in April, staged in AUS and the return leg will be in November in NZ.

What i was rambling on about...skip to 00:19

Defending middle pulls corner hard (towards right side of screen) allowing right attacking middle (scorps) to step back in forcing a shut down. i.e. defending middle on right attacking middle, defending link on left attacking middle
Notice how the left middle (scorps) simply stayed on the inside shoulder of the link shutting down (and probably even settling 5meters out)? That made the shutting link having to sprint way up from the line in order to make that touch...wrong hand reaches to affect touch, body is turned inwards, momentum carries him forward into the ruck, and the only way to get back onside fast enough is to bolt back with his back turned over 7-8 meters before getting onside...not something his wing would've preferred. Even so, he was not in time to pull the corner! Result is 2 on 1, with winger caught in two places as to who to chase.

Same play being set up at 00:47 but this time, ball is thrown long to the wing.

This is about having the same set-up but being opened to many options at the same time. This keeps defenders thinking about whats going to happen next, hence putting their mind in two places.

I'm just going to denote the positions to make it easier:

Right attacking middle=>(1); Defending middle=> (1a)

Left attacking middle=>(2); Defending middle=>(2a)

First Phase
So this play starts with the two middles, with right middle(1) running a quickie (6-7 meters out) to the right.

Option#1-If his own defending middle(1a) doesn't pull corner(pulls straight back) or pulls corner too slowly, right middle(1) will have the option to score btw middle link gap. The attacking link and wing to the right of this middle(1) at that moment commits and runs at the respective holes to draw out the defending link and wing so as to open up the gap between middle link gap for a dive through.

Option #2-If defending link shuts, there'll be an option to throw either a short/long ball to link/wing respectively, depending on how the shut downs are.

As the game builds up, the defending middle(1a) may become accustomed to the attacking middle(1) running quickies to the right and begins to read the runs and prepares to pull corner hard. NOW, the same attacking right middle(1) runs the same quickie but changes attacking direction and steps in-field (this middle(1) is alive and can score). The defending middle(1a) is caught pulling corner as he has already committed in that direction.

Option #3-If other defending middle(2a) fails to shut down, attacking middle(1) dives through middle middle gap.

Option #4-If the defending middle(2a) shuts while defending link doesn't, attacking middle(1) commits defending middle(2a) turning him inwards and other attacking middle(2) scores btw middle link gap.

Option #5-If both defending middle(2a) and link shuts down, right attacking middle(1) passes ball immediately after he steps back infield to left attacking middle(2) who will have the following roles:

=> he is to "find" the tag by positioning himself on the inside shoulder of the link shutting down and over a distance which is just enough to cause shutting link to run out for the tag. This is because:

a) the shutting link will rush up to make the "easy" tag bringing his whole momentum forward and hence making it harder for him to get back onside.
b) staying on inside shoulder of shutting link may cause poorer defenders to turn bodies inward while shutting and even making tags with outside arm.

The attacking middle (2) will position himself just at about 5m out when receiving the pass so that shutting link, after making the tag will still need to get onside by pulling corner, before being alive again. Attacking middle (1) becomes the acting half.

Second Phase
The attacking link and wing meanwhile will be committed at running their lines (NOT remaining static) respectively as attacking middle(1) passes off as acting half. In this case, attacking link may take a slightly inward running angle into link wing gap to draw in defending wing for an easier option of throwing a long ball.

Option #6-If defending wing shuts on link, attacking middle(1) throws long ball out to attacking wing.

Option #7-If defending wing stays on attacking wing man to man, attacking middle (1) throws a short ball to link as defending link will still be running back to get onside.

Option #8-If defending link is fast enough to get back onside and cover, attacking middle(2) can split to short side as attacking middle(1) picks up as acting half who has the option to hand a short ball to splitter or splitter could be ready for a trail ball from attacking link.

Thats basically it; 8 options from two phases, 6 man touch. Please feel free to criticise this play or perhaps suggest a few improvements and even if it means telling me that its fundamentally wrong, please do it! I've tried my best to apply Tony Trad's (Aus men's coach) philosophy of same set up with different options.

Lots of practice and PATIENCE is needed if a team is ever going to pull this off...if ever.

Being a part of Sixpack not only requires an inductee to be reasonably skilled and committed to the sport but to also be imbued with certain qualities. Different sets of value systems and widely held beliefs should be unhinged, remoulded and centred around what ultimately works for an organisation, society or group for a unified purpose. This forms the backbone of the culture we see facilitating the dynamics of large global operations to the most minute faction such as, an athletic squad. Pervasiveness of culture can only be brought about with effective communication first , followed by the deliberation to put theory into practice. And that effective communication starts here...

I think it is important not only to be acquainted with plays (as your personal responsibilty to the team) on the field but to also understand that behavioural conduct is paramount as well; how we carry ourselves and how we reflect on ourselves, our team mates and the team as a whole. Its time to cast aside all other undesirable forms of behaviour, traits, habits and deficiencies, which may contradict what i believe represents the value system and principles which define our team culture. This is a team, which means only actions that result in the benefit of the entire team or such a proposed end should be considered - to this end, only the benefit derived for the whole (the team) shall take precedence over the benefit derived by an individual, and only so far as it remains harmonious with the whole. This ethical basis is in recognition of the proponents of utilitarianism or consequentialism (an ethical perspective/belief) which recognises the greatest benefit must be derived for the greatest number of people, for any such actions to be considered ethical; the ends justify the means. Thus, the means by which we reengineer all our attitudes and behaviours toward a common goal is therefore justifiable as doing so reaps the highest benefit for a greater order in existence even if this means impinging the peculiarities of a mere individual.

The maxims we share:

1. We do not boast or quit.

2. Being a cheerful loser and a QUIET winner.

3. Respect our competition (that means no trash talk, taunting).

4. Integrity and Humility.

Insofar, may we actually live by these principles rather than be perceived as doing so and hopefully become the prime specimen for others to follow. As with Kant(german ethical thinker), he proposes the notion to do good without qualification or as an attainment of a desired or further end. Simply put, we should behave in a way that embodies our willingness to do good without any desire, aversion or inclination to serve some ulterior motive. Further, the rationale behind instituting a principle based (flexible) approach to conduct is to allow members some remit as to how such principles can be accomplished within their own terms or comfort zones...although its difficult to see how such principles can be hard to apply. So i can't be more plain than to say "just do it". Apart from that, this is perhaps a better approach in general as compared to one that is strictly rule based, which basically means mandatory and the last thing we want is to subjugate people, bending them into submission like despots. I think this measure may only serve to stifle the whole idea of having a free exchange of ideas and stems the flow of creativity and inhibits constructive challenges.

A week of adequate rest following a convincing win over the inexperienced UWC boys has led us to the deciding round which will determine the league champion for this year's WTL. It appears that the unintended laying off of team practice over the last week may have just given us that crucial bit of recovery that we were all in need of.

Ruck-ups were surprisingly coordinated relative to past weeks and handling was fairly acceptable and will still need improvement. Defense definitely marked a slight improvement which saw players squeezing in and had most adopting a delightful habit of being chattier unlike recent weeks. Wingers communicated well into their centres and links while observing from their vantage point. Evidently, lesser errors were committed in ruck-ups which obviously translated to more possesions enjoyed in opposition's 5. Various players were alloted some remit for a certain amount of flare but still maintaining a formalised approach in attack, allowing the team to play cohesively in general. Tries were scored with our wingers staying wide and only coming in if necessary.

Tries from opposition resulted from the lack of communication in most crucial instances and could have been prevented by players being more vigilant in defense to shut down in time if other man is beaten instead of ball watching or just being undecided. A try also resulted from a winger being caught off side as he advanced to affect the touch. A winger is generally advised against affecting the touch, but to do so would mean making the line as quickly as possible at the very least instead of plodding back. From my recollection, only a try or two at most (or none at all) was scored off a good sidestep, but was generally ineffective against a tighter defense and effective shutting down in the event a man was beaten.

Overall, one of the better games played this season at the same time considering this to be the most crucial. We could have had a harder time playing a more senior Monsoon side today with adequate numbers. For the younger players, it is worth banking in the experience earned today after playing a good side. Still, a good effort for the win but much to be rectified and built upon because its still a long hard road out of hell.

Just came back from a gruelling NTL training with East. Something to share with you guys as it could be useful to think about.

No not a new move.

No not another defense policy.

No nothing about the FREE F1 race i'll be having the privilege of attending this Sunday for FREE.And did i mention it was FREE? No no no don't think so...yeah so its FREE. Huh? didn't hear me back there? i said its FREE.

Yeah ok, so down to it. I was running with the ball and while passing to a man on my inside, i planted my right leg awkwardly into the ground and lost my balance. The speed at which i was travelling could have easily landed me in some bad shape because i had my entire ankle twisted outwards before falling over. Thankfully as you are reading this, i'm actually sitting here quite comfortably w/o even the slightest discomfort in my ankle.

I realised the only possible thing which may have prevented me from sustaining a bad injury or worse a torn ligament was my enhanced proprioceptive awareness. No no, this does not mean i'm genetically more superior in any way, unless you are a single cell organism?

"Proprioceptors in the skin, muscle and joints provide feedback to the central nervous system as to the position of a joint. If a joint (eg knee) is approaching a position that may place it at risk of injury (eg hyperextension and risk of ACL rupture) the proprioceptors can relay that information back to the central nervous system and adjustments in muscle activation can take place that may prevent that injury occurring."

Basically, as a person moves, muscles contract to facilitate that movement. And when that same movement requires a person to negotiate a sharp turn in a state of instability, muscles around your joint automatically contract in such a way to prevent joints from being displaced; and this happens without the person's conscious perception of the unstable terrain. Call it a 'sixth sense' if you will. Nerve receptors or proprioreceptors in your muscles and joints communicate information of an imminent angle displacemnt in the joints to the brain, which then travels back to the muscles around the joint to contract appropriately.

There are ways to train your proprioceptive abilities which are most handy given the undulating nature of most of our playing surfaces. I use a wobble board which is basically this contraption made of wood/plastic in a form of a disc on which you stand on and attempt to balance as the board swivels and wobbles. Another way could be balancing on a medicine ball or simply standing on one leg and starting to perform squats as your balance improves.

Always work progressively with these methods of training. Always start with both legs on the wobble board or med ball before progressing to one. For the med ball, it'll help to hold on to something initially. As you get better at it, try closing your eyes or doing things like juggling a ball, folding your arms or scratching your arse...yeah. I personally spend about 5 mins every two-three days on the board while watching TV to serve as a distraction and to challenge my senses. PLEASE work progressively if you're to consider such training methods. The last thing you want is having to undergo rehabilitation as a result of a prehabilitative mishap.

If you're looking for a wobble board, i know of this stockist down the street but i'll have to check if they still stock it. There is a downside though...i bought mine for SGD$99.00. Ok fellas, good luck with the little bit of info but you may wanna search the web to find out more.But with this, i may have already saved you a painful trip to the hospital and months of psychological battles. Be safe out there.

WTL 2008: Mid-League Review

Hello boys and gals! Welcome to the Mid-League Review for WTL 2008, brought to you by our proud sponsors... ACL (Always Cock-up Legs) Pte Ltd! Tearing knees and tearing eyes since 2007!

We've come to the 6th round of the 2008 Winter League series and here we look at at the top 3 teams competing for honours.

Current table-topper is none other than Monsoon Dragons, previously known as Wanderers. Looking very impressive at number 1 with the maximum 18 points, Dragons have been dominating their opponents in every game. Highest scoring team with the stingiest defence, Dragons are deserving of their position so far. Even disposing of Bucks Golden 9-1 in the process. Things are looking up for them at the moment but their fight to stay on top will be stiffer when they face the speedy 6Pack in Round 8.
PREDICTION: Top of the table until Round 8. Definitely to finish in the top 2. Serious league contender.

Breathing down the leader's neck closely is the crowd's favourite 6Pack. At 2nd place, 6Packs managed to gain a respectable 17 out of 18 points. Dropping a precious single point when they drew 3-3 with Bucks. Experienced campaigners Alan Lowton, Gideon Luo and Lee Yum Hwa have been trying to blend in new players to the team style of play with some success. The sound youth policy of the team has groomed impressive players like Joshua "the Freak" who has been terrorizing opponents in similar style to a past player, Amila. The younger batch of players brought in from the various polytechnics have proven to be a mix lot but nevertheless, promising. Only time will tell if they'll live up to their potential and help bring back some silverware. Their biggest challenge will be to slay the table-topper Dragons and be the one on top for once.
PREDICTION: If they can peak at the right time of the league, 6Pack might be able to pull a fast one over the Dragons and hold on to first place. But it's still too close to say. Definite top 3 finish.

At third place, Bucks Golden have grown to be stronger year after year. A heady mix of experience, youth and free beer have put Bucks as the dark horse of the tournament. Unfortunately, the 9-1 loss against Dragons have dashed their title hopes and their main aim currently would be to fight for the number 2 spot.
PREDICTION: 3rd place. Even if they managed to get maximum points, they still have to accumulate a massive goal difference to displace the current top 2.

Special Highlight: Republic Polytechnic (RP)
RP, a fertile ground for young touch players, has produced slick players the likes of Amila, Sujan, Taufiq, Terence, Kenneth Chitty, Matthew and the list goes on. With such accomplished youth players as these RP alumni, the current crop of RP players have found their school legacy to be a two-edged sword. Self-inflicted pressure to win has caused some cracks within the team and resulted in plenty of harsh words being thrown during training and games. Newly hired coach, Adam of 6Pack fame, has been kept very busy trying to weave together these raw players into a seamless, fire-retardant and not Made-in-China touch team. "If these boys can just grasp the concept that team spirit is what drives team performance, I believe they'll be able to put up a strong showing in the upcoming Asian All-Schools. At this moment, we're all trying to learn how to work together and reach a common understanding.", said Adam. With a solid performance against rival Singapore Polytechnic in Round 2, the team is looking forward to the next match against another rival school, Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Sparks are set to fly in this highly anticipated match-up and it is for sure that both teams will not hold back to one-up the other.

Attacking common 'Defence Policies'

Players need to recognize that there're 3 areas of defence on the touch field. These 3 areas/zones should have their own individual policies specific to the field position and ability of the opposition.

First Zone - Kill or Shoot Defence

This zone will see teams attempting to get off their line and out of their own half. The KILL/SHOOT D. is commonly used to isolate and prevent teams from achieving a good momentum advancing off their line. It is important that defenders do not buy wraps or dummies, by applying pressure in the face of the attacking side forcing possible errors, isolations and principally to prevent them from getting a good go ahead using their cohesive rucking patterns.

Key elements in this defensive policy:
- provide protection by covering up behind the shooting players
- this policy should not see the same player making touches in a row as this work load should be equally shared.

Second Zone - Slide Defence

This applies when the attacking team has gained good yardage from thier cohesive rucking patterns and are situated somewhere in the middle part of the field. Defensive players maintain the line of defence without overcommiting but instead slide along the 'gain line' in an effort to adjust to the attacking advancement. It is important for players to cover wraps and inside passes. Communication is vital amongst the defensive line in all 3 zones.

Third Zone - Line Defence

The modern game has seen a variety of defensive styles since the advent of the 6 aside game from the 7 aside variant. Initially, teams had to adopt a "run like hell policy" which means having to come to terms with steppers who have superior directional changing abilties. Eventually, teams have adapted by introducing defensive policies which better prepared them against their more athletic and flamboyant counterparts.

Common line defence policies

#1 CHASE OUT DON'T CHASE IN

The term refers to chasing out from between the middle position away to the sidelines. A defender should mark up against the opposite player covering them from running around their outside.

If a defender were to chase out and the attacker were to step back inside them, a defending player should not turn and chase in towards the middle line as they would leave themselves open to an overlap of players from either a wrap, sweep or switch play.

EG.

Here an attacking link runs in and a defending link chases in, allowing a switch to creat a 2 v 1 scenario.

This is really basic stuff so i won't expect many of you to take an interest but for those a lil' wet behind the ears, you might not wanna turn your nose up so soon. Ok, for all current 6packers, new ones, old ones, stalkers, wannabes, kaypos, you may recall a video i posted not too long ago relating to the Victoria Touch League. And i'm quite proud to inform you ppl that a certain someone (which i will not mention for fear of his safety-dun know what diehard fans are capable of these days) who used to grace our ranks, has been successful in the Vipers squad trials. Yes thats right, this one person in fact managed to convince two VT league teams he was top brass, but having to settle for a better option he went for the 2007 VT League 1st runner up, Vipers. I had the opportunity to speak with him although not in person, and this is what he had to say.

MANIPULATION OF DEFENDER

Play at 00:16 - No.7 receives a pass from No.8 and fakes to dump with No.8 appearing as the acting half. This draws the defender in who attempts to take the touch but is beaten as the "acting half" fulfills every essence of the word acting and pulls away instead, thus creating an instant 2 v 1 or 3 v 2 situation as seen in the video. It REALLY is about defender manipulation;convincing them to behave and react in the manner that you desire and then pulling the rabbit out of the hat.

For those who weren't around, this move was mentioned in a touch clinic not some time ago presented by Peter Bell (coach for aus women's open). IF memory serves well, I think it was called a "D". As in "A" being the dummy switch and "B" being the actual switch we've been practicing, or will be in the not too distant future?! I suppose the new boys won't be familiar with this.

Fast Forward to 5:50 - No.7 Drumayne DayBerg-Muir attempts a jink-a-dive but was caught...just barely. Bit of trivia - he is currently ranked the top player in the world of touch and being accorded player of the NTL series '05 and '07. Represents QLD state and Australia.

Play at 00:35 - Both middles at work. One goes for the dump and feints towards direction of split(encouraging opposite man to peddle back in a single direction) but steps back in, while half scoops right and draws his own man away to create a hole for the splitter to slide in for a try. Although notice how the dumper consciously sets it up by taking the dump only in the MIDDLE and only on his *OPPOSITE DEFENDING MIDDLE...presumably to 1)create enough space for the scooper to draw his man to the right 2)force the *OPPOSITE DEFENDING MIDDLE in having to come up for the touch instead of getting onside.

A similiar play can also be observed 00:42, with what appears to be a "JAM" at the start. So for those who panic when a "JAM" doesn't work out, simply think of this move as mentioned. A third can also be seen at 2:00 which was negated by a handling error. There may be many other underlying inner workings involved as well. This is after all, a level we can never hope to attain...over the next year or so. Feel free to give your two shots at it with your own ideas.

23rd Feb was a important date for 6 Pack.

Not only was it their first game of the season, but it was also the day of debuts as Lewis, Syahrein, Aloy, Wan Wan, Chups made their first bow on the club stage. 6 Pack has expanded on their youth academy, adding NP and SIM to their stable of feeder clubs.

So 6 Pack faced Bedok Kings on that day. It was the old guard that opened the scoring as a dummy-half break from a Teapot by Terence led to Muhdy opening 6 Pack's official try account for the year. Muhdy though, failed to return the favour as his dummy-half break pass to Terence went forward.

Captain and Vice-Captain, Khairul and Alan added to the scoreline, while Taufiq chipped in with two tries as 6 Pack ended the half 5-0 to the good. Fitness levels wasn't at its best, but there were still a few smiles at half-time.

Gideon and Alan scored again in the 2nd half as Taufiq completed his hat-trick, earning the First Player of The Day award for the year. Aloy, the poor debutant who got burned by an ah pek because of some problem with his toes was awarded the Dick Of The Day Award for ruining 6 Pack's clean sheet.

History shows that the only other player to receive a Dick Of The Day award on his debut was David Teo in 2006 who went on to be 6 Pack's Top Scorer in his first season so it shouldn't be too bad ya?

Next up! Wanderers! It will be a big big game, pity i cant play really.. Good luck boys.

The End Is The Beginning

There are some ways of coming to terms with defeat. Whichever process that is deemed as appropriate, such as by mutual conviction, past practice, peer pressure or simply just to be dangled over the railing by the ankles to be persuaded, the general idea is to pack all your emotional baggage (i.e anger, mistrust, hate, confusion, tiredness, anxiety, grudges, grievances, sexual deprivation) in a forgettable little box, locked away! And so it is, this belief must be embraced by even the greatest of teams;a hard brush of reality one must face and submit to unprecedented(although that shouldn't be too often).

20 October 2007 was precisely one of those days for the sport of Touch Football and Rugby Union where devotees to the exalted realms of each respective sport were overwhelmed with shock and disbelief. Two of the most celebrated teams clashed head-on with the adversary. As only one could emerge triumphant, fate had the last call and the winning teams received the nod from above, which left fans utterly destroyed and even questioning if the sport should ever continue to be played. We are of course referring to both teams which have undoubtedly lost, but conceded with grace that fateful day - The English Rose (RWC 2007) and Sixpack (NTL 2007).

On a more intimate scale, defeat concluded the season for us but had also opened a new year for one amongst us. A new 26th year. A very drunk 26th year...chiefly. For those who missed the soiree, it was a regrettable miss. However, a blow-by-blow account will be attempted for those who missed it for apparantly trustworthy reasons...and as pictures do most of the telling, we shall not deny them that...

NTL Semi-Finals : Six Pack vs Bucks Golden

Time: 1350hrs
Venue: Turf City
Weather: Cloudy with soft ground conditions

Losing a few players to injuries and commitement to contact rugby, SixPack went on to play Bucks Golden in a Semi-finals of the NTL. Bucks Golden fielded a team without most of their younger players. Nevertheless, angled running and good chemistry between the Bucks players resulted in the first try of the match.

Soon after, SixPack infamous for the "die,die must try" attitude equalized with great 70metres dash by "TheKhairul". The try proved to be the turning point of the game as SixPack began to pick up momentum. Bucks Golden had a hard time defending our ruck-ups and SixPack exploited a stagger in defence with a combination of Amila"Special" and Edwin's finishing touch. Lack of communication resulted in a couple of dropped balls in our half. Good angled running drawing defenders out of position before a switch proved to be effective resulting in a try. Credit have to be given to Bucks Golden for integrity by informing the Referee that there was no touch. Hard ruck-ups created an opportunity for Edwin"Gonzalez" to break Bucks Line of defence and link up with Josh"The Freak" with a switch before gliding through for a try.

Half-time score: 4 Six Pack 1 Bucks Golden.

A change of strategy was needed in the second half. SixPack explored the 2-man ruck-up. The quick and effective way of gaining ground and momentum in attack caused a stir in Bucks defence. Soon after, Bucks capitalized on the errors at the wings with a miss pass to an unmarked Bucks player for a try. Sixpack were punished for sleeping at the try line with Bucks overlapping runs and inside pass. Immediately after conceding the try, SixPack replied with a try. A combination of Alan "Lontong" Special and "TheKhairul" 2-man ruck and switch of Amila"Special" left Bucks staring at grass for a while.

Fatigue starts to set in. SixPack lost a couple of possesion due bad ball handling. Bucks began to put on the pressure on SixPack defence. Determined to set foot in the NTL Finals, SixPack never let anyone through. Till the final whistle is blown.

NTL Match - Six Pack vs Wanderers (Round 2-Match 3)

“All things are possible when you believe”

The game against Wanderers last Saturday explains it all. Though the game was won Six Pack have to remember that we can lose it as easy as we have won it. Believing alone is not enough to win us Championships but accompanied by hard work, anything is possible.

With 12 people in the starting lineup, we started off by conceding a try in the first few minutes. Six Pack, infamous with the “die, die must try” attitude replied back with a try at the wings. The game started to pick up momentum with both teams pushing themselves to their limits. Miscommunication between the Sri-Lankan Tigers led to a breakthrough by Wanderers. Six Pack showed their flair in ball handling resulting in a try at the wings. Wanderers did a quick 2-man punch catching our link and winger off guard, thus a try. Just before the first half whistle was blown, Alan did what he is best; “The Lontong Special” only to realize that he was the dummy-half. The controversial try smoked not only the players and spectators but also the referee who passed it off as a try.

Half-time score: 4 Six Pack 3 Wanderers.

Six Pack played with structure and defended their tryline well. Conceding only 1 try in the second half. Wanderers began to lose focus and dropped a couple of balls resulting in change of possession. Six Pack capitalized on this error and used every single touch we had to pile up on the score. Taufiq ”Quick Feet” created a 4 v 3 situation which resulted in Terrance scoring at the wings unmarked. Six Pack maintained their lead throughout the match. Final whistle blown.

6 Pack never really paid much attention to stats, preferring to concentrate on gameplay and wins.

Things haven been looking up for us this season. But we have been improving... Tommorrow shall see if we can finally turn the corner. Don't get pressured though as now we take you though our detailed analysis of 6 Pack's Performance Past and Present.

1. Amazingly, 6 Pack has only lost 2 games and won the rest in their whole NTL history. Those were during this season, the narrow 1 try loss to Wanderers and 2 try loss to Bucks.

2. 6 Pack has the best defence this season, conceding 17 tries in 7 games. 2nd is Wanderers with 26 tries in 7 games. That is a whooping 9 tries, enough to win a game.

3. However Wanderers has the best attack in the league, displacing 6 Pack from last season with 73 tries in 7 matches. But 6 Pack has the 2nd best attack this season with 56 tries. Shows the competition between the teams.

4. Before the 2 try loss to Bucks Golden this season, 6 Pack has never lost by more than a try in a STL/NTL match.

5. The stats analysis show 6 Pack is an extremely competitive team and fights to the end.

Still halfway though the season, 6 Pack. All's not gone yet. Deep inside all of us, we know we have the quality to make it.

Things might look bleak to some, but do remember we lost by soft tries and silly errors. If we cut them out, we will do so much better.

But I don't know if its the pressure of the expectation of retaining the title, but even old heads are losing their cool which leads to more pressure on the rest and the team cracks.

We need leadership now, not complaining and blaming. I dont know about the others especially the young players, but I feel pressure when I take the field. I rather not make a mistake than score a try. I feel restricted on the field, not able to express myself freely.

I guess its a learning curve for me.

But key point of this post is, let's become more positive. Let's encourage each other more. Don't let the pressure get you down. Think about how you are going to get to the try-line and create/score the try, not about how to get back from 1-0 down. Like what khairul says, smile!

P.S - I was late on saturday because no cab took my booking and i had to move to another location before a cab took my booking. Trust me, I am as angry and upset as some are about me being late but I do think everyone should be given a chance to explain themselves, right or wrong. It's in the past now, but sorry to everyone for being late on last saturday.

NTL Match 2 - Six-pack VS RP

NTL Match 2
Result: Won 14-0

Suppose to boot up by 12.30 but as usual, the dudes were late. Around 1pm, the warm-up finally began and we did a recap on “NINJA” and the variation, an extra punch up for a dummy-half scoop through. As the warm-up continues, some RP guys were spotted spying on what Six-pack is doing.

“Eh, we learn all their moves right?” said RP-1.
“Ya ya, once they call it in the match we know how to counter already.” said RP-2.
“Eh, than what is that move they are doing now? NINJAaaaa?” said RP-1.
“Eh, not sure, see how the match goes…”

So RP started off the kick off. Not too long after that, it was the first turnover and the start of Six-pack score trying streak. We did a structured punch-up followed by the famous “Teapot” by the side.

Faint sounds came from the two RP side after the first try…
“Eh, you know right? That move?” said RP-1.
“Aiya, you know they going to do it already, you never help me cover.” said RP-2.

So what was the Six-pack response?
“Guys, we do teapot until they learn It.”

With that guideline in mind, Six-pack scored 4 consecutive tries just by doing Teapot. Match continues with a couple of breakthrough in the center. Just before the end of the first half, RP saw a chance coming when Loo is slowly drifting in. RP did a commit and pass to their winger and he run pass Loo. However, that guy is no faster than our Lucky Loo, as he got touch at the try-line. The first half ended with approx 6-0.

During the break, Khairul (The Elder) reminded Six-pack of the core values of being a Six-Packian.

“Eh guys, some heads are getting big. Burst it now. Six-pack don’t boast, remember that. We may be smiling now but next week, let’s see whose smiling. I know I will be smiling.”

“Eh, Sorry guys… I know my head is getting bigger..I mis-took the diamond blue pill instead of my 'roid” said Loo.

Next week, against the Wanderers, more than just a rivalry game. Keeping that in mind, we played with better structure and more discipline during the second half. A fast three-man punch-up and we saw Khairul running through the helpless RP defense, scoring the first try on the second-half. Following the example set, Six Pack did fast ruck-ups and scored numerous tries. Around the third-quarter of the second-half, a miscommunication between Mudhy and Amila cause a RP guy to break through the Six Pack defense.

“His MINE!!!” said Amila, as Muhdy hang back waiting.

When the RP guy was at the try line, Six-pack thought that the clean sheet for the day was broken. However, Amila did a full body dive (which seems like his actually flying in the air for about 2 seconds) and touch the RP guy before he could plant the ball.

So the game ended with 14 tries on Six-pack score sheet, while RP (Never-give-up attitude) with 0 tries. Let’s reflect the same score tally with this week match against Wanderers. Six-pack Booya!

NTL Match - Six Pack vs Bedok

Weather: Hot with soft ground conditions
Referee: Penny and Cock-eye Man

NTL Round 1 Match 1
Result: Won 12 - 2

The match started off with Bedok kicking off. At the first turnover, we punched hard at the center creating open spaces in the middle for the first try. Supporting play for the try was excellent. Our second and subsequent try came from a combination of quick hands and dummy breaks. Our defense in the first half was good. Even so, we were giving Bedok too much space at the center as our center defense cover was very slow.

Bedok's try came in from a center defense error where which caused a penalty try. ~~His fat ass~~ The soft ground caused Adam to slip and Bedok's quick reaction to exploit the situation paid off. Penalty try was given for ~~bitch-slapping~~ grabbing and touching the try scorer repeated times before getting onside. The score was approximately 6 tries to 1 at half time.

The second half started with a new set of 6. Miscommunication between the centers and the links resulted in a couple of turnovers from dropped balls. We began to pick up momentum after 5 minutes from the kick off of the second half. There were a number of opportunities where we did not exploit the extra numbers on the wings. This is caused by 3 factors. The ball carrier did not straighten up his running line; the passes did not connect with the receiver and the receiver cutting back in instead of running straight into the gaps for a pass.

The last ten minutes of the second half saw a couple of individual efforts to break the line at the middle zone. Bedok managed to squeeze one try in at the link and wing gap in the last ten minute period. The error is caused by the link being obstructed by the referee. Our defense was slightly stronger in the second half. The match ended of with a score of 12-2.

It was a hard shoving, elbow sticking extravaganza which met the paparazzi at Zouk (Phuture) on Wed night 1 Aug . They left no table unturned and every slop of accidental barf hardly escaped the keen eyes of the mob...which had counted on every discriminating evidence to put them on the trace of any member of Sixpack which, according to a tip-off, would be making an appearance that night. It was not long...the obvious couldn't have been any clearer and as though having their prayers answered, they cleaved and hacked through the sea of bodies seeming to amass just around our celebrated quarry. Not only were they greeted with our heroes at last but along with some hot lil' numbers as well...YEOUCH! Two birds for the stone! They simply couldn't resist the gnawning idea of putting up a lil' competition, and immediately set off to crown the very first SixPackBlog MAMBO KING & QUEEN! NTU Touch Attack- Episode 2

With individuals such as Alan Lowton, David Teo, Khairullah, Sujan Jayalath, Gideon(whom some might recognise as that guy in that shirt who needs a dating coach) and various other names synonymous with households around Singapore. It is no wonder why the SRC teams dominated the NTU Touch Attack with 2 out of 3 teams making it to the final.

The first match pitted 2 SRC teams against each other. Alan Keys and The BooLees. All talk aside, both teams got down to business. or at least 1 did.

Killing all anticipation of an all-out fight, Alan Keys dominated from the get-go and demolished their former peers early on with their intense plays.

Although having 2 of the players from the euphoric SPARTANS who had earlier obliterated everything that stood in their way during the previous weekend's fun touch tournament. The Boolees performed below-par and looked awfully helpless. Which again brings up the question of who really is the true MVP.

In the end, Individual brilliance, careful planning and explosive plays from 1 team in contrast to Total incompetence, tactical naivity and poorly executed side-steps from the other, resulted in a hiding that even The Prison's Touch Team would be ashamed of. BooLees despite their confidence at the start of the tournament, left the field with their heads hanging in between their legs.

That defeat spelt the beginning of the end for the BooLees, as soon after they crashed out of the tournament, losing to Veterans Bedok and struggling against the perennial whipping boys from RP. A sad end for one of the favourites of the tournament..

After losing XJ to dinner plans, Alan Keys managed to cruise through the group matches, undefeated. Defeating the Bedok Kings and outclassing the 2 nippy youngsters from Rp, Taufik and Terence. A pity, the young talents sent in 6 teams and all they got to show for it were their goodie bags.

Khairage Under Fire vs Bedok Kings(2-0)

Bedok Kings fresh from beating the living daylights out of the BooLees, came into this match thinking that they could take the scalp of another SRC team. Unfortunately for the Kings, they were crushed by the smart plays of Khairul and one of their own from contact, Daniel Thiam. "1,2 Step" Josh made sure of the finishes while Thiam and Khairul opened up the gaps. "maybe, maybe we can win..."- Gideon

Final

Alan Keys vs Khairage(2-1)

Khairage, the darkhorses in the final. Started strong in defense and absorbed the endless siege and started to get the fans believing that it was the Day of the Underdogs. But alas, it was not to be.

"A team is only as strong as it weakest link."

David Teo broke past a stumbling Gideon with arms flailing and scored the first try of the game.

Marlina Kasbi soon put the game beyond reach as she dived past an exposed and offside Gideon. Khairage managed to spark a miniature comeback of somesort with a consolation try in deep into stoppage time. But it was not to be. The fairytale couldn't come true. David couldn't beat Goliath this time. He and his mates just had to settle to kicking the arses of the rest of their 6pack teamates.

Touch Attack Episode 1- Introducing The Fresh Faces

Normally you would think that I would start part 1 of this trilogy with a not so subtle self-praise remark, a Gaydeon joke and a wise crack about Yum's intelligence to boot. However for your reading pleasure, I've decided to part with tradition and introduce to the world of touch, 2 up and coming players who helped both SRC teams make the final of the NTU Touch Attack.

Azlina

Age : 21

Occupation : Student

Playing History : Tp Piranhas(Captain)(Pol-Ite Champions), Alan Keys(NTU Touch Attack 2007 Champions)

First, we bring to you. Azlina. The star captain for Tp made her debut for Alan Keys last saturday and turned in an awesome overall tournament performance.

Despite, stunning the most proud(Yum) with her lightning quick dive and burning the most embarrassed with her incredible speed, she managed to endure the whole length of games and carry on without a single complaint at the lack of subs. A rumour has started that she might be drafted into 6pack next season. She will definitely give Kenny a run for his money.

Daniel "Potato" Thiam

Age: 25

Occupation: Unemployed or still Student ar?

Playing History : Singapore Reds, Saints, NTU, Khairage Under Fire(NTU Touch Attack 2007 Runners-Up)

Thiam or affectionately known as "Potato" has been a regular fixture in the National Squad. Despite his many failings in his many attempts at touch rugby, Thiam jumped at the chance to play with his former school mates Khairul and Gideon. It is not known how Gideon got Thiam to play in his team. Said Thiam, 25 before the tournament started " Wah lau, I skipped National Team's Fitness Training today. So that I will be well rested and ready to go in this tournament. Finally my chance to win something in touch."

Thiam's sporadic game time managed to drag Khairage Under Fire to an Insipid performance against Bedok in the semis. However his "Hiding Behind People" antics in the final leaves alot to be desired.

It might be wishful thinking, but we here in the 6pack Times hope that this will not be the end of "Potato's" Touch Rugby Career. Have we seen the end of this colourful character?

Just like any other morning, the dew sodden grass turned drearily with each blade as if yawning in familiar recognition of the rising sun. However normal the morning mist use to greet the familiar grounds, it was this morning, which was unusually accompanied by some quiet bustling and occasional shuffling of activity, which punctuated the otherwise usually peaceful air of a Saturday morning. This morning as it turns out…will be more than any other day…because the boys of SickPax have come to play, eager to show that SickPax pride!!

19^th May 2007 – SMU Touch Carnival 2007. One of the many days of importance on 6 Pack’s annual calendar…but still, just another competition to wrap up, another bunch of teams to be sent packing (usually accompanied by broken hearts and shattered egos), another stroke on the wall, and hopefully another batch of medals to add to the trophy cabinet.

Team line-up assessment:

ADAM (C)

The Captain of “SickPax”, who despite having a slight difficulty of getting the team name spelling right, led a pack of boys with little team playing experience and dynamics to victory. Even wrought with such a grueling task, he still had the energy left in him to scale two huge mountains that very same night. Good on yeh mate!!

TAMAGOCHI (Japanese guy who sounded like “Tamagochi”)

A highly and expertly trained specialist, hired to deliver a deadly and precise blow to a hard spotted weakness in the opposition. Or a careless mercenary simply hauled in to perform kamikaze stunts at unsuspecting allied tanks. You decide.

AMILA

A little rusted and a little more sober than an Irish bartender, our Lankan friend still managed to deliver sweet punches on the score sheet.

EZEKIEL

Relatively new to the team and to a certain extent, the sport, this bloke made off fairly well with his good knowledge and skills, as well as support play. A fine addition to the ranks. Good man!

Another freshman in the SixPack school of touchdowns. Will he persevere to move himself up the hierarchy? Will the new rookie oust Terence who is presently the reigning “hot rod” who had previously ousted David “yesterday’s news” Teo, or will he have to resort to swallowing spunk and be seen in the likes of Gideon “New Urban Male (pui!)” Loh?

JITWEI

Only recognizable with a cloud of smoke where his head should have been. Still amazingly in shape (Yes…man with round paunch is a shape) even after a long break of mugging or smoking on torn pages from his textbooks. Easy on the stogies you fuckin’ hippie!

JOSHUA

Possibly a distant cousin of Speedy Gonzales…nuff said.

KENNY

Decisive on attack, which landed a couple of match winning tries. No movement on the ‘getting burnt’ chart which sets him well…this time.

KHAIRUL (LALA)

A WONDER from two seasons ago before he had an epiphany and decided contact rugby was still his “thing”…now he WONDERS why he did such a stupid thing. However, still the phenomenal player, a great motivator, listens to the wife (moans later), and better if not being constantly over shadowed by ‘infamous swirling belly’.

YUMHWA

Claimed that “The Shadow” needed a break….Boooring!!

CHRIS

An ex-warrior resurrected to fight for the SickPax Juggernaut. However, the summoning message didn’t quite sink in, as the bolts weren’t screwed tight enough, resulting in arms being dismally uncoordinated.

DERELYN (DIDI)

A threat on attack, hardworking on defense and INVINCIBLE at the gossip table.

13. GIDEON “Call toll-free 1800-HOW-TO-HICK-A-CHICK-1111” LOH

The “Legend” despite being very much over-aged (which still doesn’t seem to deter him from leering at little girls) still made his contributions in ways no other guy in SickPax will ever want to imagine…not even by a long shot! The spectator cum cheerleader of SickPax pranced around in his signature white and blue swimsuit thong, waving and punching his pompoms with celebrated conviction, lip-synching Avril Lavigne’s new hit single “Girlfriend” every time it blared over the sound system. Now that is the kind of enthusiasm and commitment our little friend here is trying to believe in, which it evidently still exists…you go girl!

Intel & surveillance from reconnaissance gathered at 0800hrs:

This carnival of ’07 mainly spotted some real muscle emerging from a couple of “old fames” and current members of the contact rugby community, as well as the usual turn outs from the SP boys and RP boys. SMU 1 & 2, were mainly comprised of some ol’school kickin’ it real, full-contact ruggers, Dan from Wanderers and a few other punters who looked like bona-fide “Please-Burn-Me” or “Burn-My-Ass-Silly” or “I’m-Just-Here-To-Get-Burnt” potentials. “The Dirty Dozen” were quickly identified to be touch players from Kent Ridge Hall of NUS, although Intel could not confirm potency at that time. SickPax surveyed their competition carefully, planned the attack in their heads in their own design, even selectively singling out the weakest links and derived a mental depiction of how best to beat those poor buggers…we’re such bastards I know. And hence the stage was set, and with a legacy and reputation at stake, a good set of arms & legs, “perve” shades, pompoms, funny suit and the works, SixPack...I mean…SickPax, bolted into action which gave way to nothing more than…a bleary start.

The hooter went off for the first time that morning, which saw the glassy eyed, weed swirling and beer swilling bunch wheeling reluctantly into action. Still half conscious and barely feeling their feet, the first starting 6 had some trouble getting the ball over the line with the ease they formerly possessed. Rucks were uncoordinated and messy, resulting in poor ball retention. Heavy and half hearted runs were in full swing and possibly the worst display of sub-ing ever...perhaps owing to the fact that the concept of a 'rolling substitution' was a completely new, complex, far fetched and profound ideology fit only for the debate amongst white withering professors or a never-before-heard alien concept possibly introduced to earth by accident in connection with an extraterrestrial breach only Area 51 knew to have traveled a gazillion light years from the farthest and deepest reaches of the Great Nebula in the Andromeda Galaxy to be finally blasted onto our planet by some celestial mishap. On the other hand, the RP boys seem to have fairly grasped the basic principles of this “divine” concept of sub-ing, which resulted in every RP player enjoying an equal benefit of playtime. Clearly possessing this mental advantage over SickPax, Terence from RP decided to stump one of the Neanderthals with an algebra question and hitting another senseless with the ol' "whats 1+1?" before sailing in for a try....all too easy. Fortunately, there was still time, and an equalizer was all SickPax needed. Before this revelation had the chance to travel through their immensely thick under evolved cranium...a smarter than your average Neanderthal managed to evolve so quickly beyond belief (similar to that of emerging from the primordial ooze on all fours) and performed the act of sub-ing which was immediately greeted with approving grunts and celebratory chest pounding. Not surprisingly, a try was scored right after the sub-ing was carried out. In a translated interview right after: “Sub-ing requires you to physically replace a team mate on the playing field, and usually with more gas than your opposing number, you are most likely to make past him to score a try…and then you get biggest rock and nice woman”. We will be following his career with much interest...

ROUND 2 - SICKPAX vs SMU 1
RESULT – KICKED ASS!

After settling in just after the first game, SickPax were more lubricated, clear headed and oiled, which brought them up against a seemingly more worthy opponent. SMU 1 boasted some old ringers of ACS rugby, who used to easily dispose of those caught in their path…in the contact arena. Unwavering in the face of adversity, and also in possession of some bragging rights themselves and not forgetting the fact that they were after all in Touch territory, SickPax stood their ground; hands by their sides in a ready position, eyes squinted under the glaring sun averted from each opposition number to the next, lips dry and parched from the heat building up, a negligible murmur from the spectators seemed to have started before coming to a muffled stop almost immediately, a faint buzzing derived from a horsefly just inches above one particularly rotund opposition, a slight breeze rustled past above their heads carrying what could have been befittingly a ball of tumbling weed. The next 15 minutes which ensued, saw SMU 1 attempting to run SickPax ragged through the use of long passes, short gaps and blistering pace on the wing. The SickPax defense was calm and relentless, clearly holding SMU 1 at bay for the first 5 minutes. Turnovers were utilized well with numerous attempts at the usual “USUALs” and “Xs” which were expertly employed catching the opposition well off guard. All appeared to be in perfect order as it should be, and when it felt that nothing in the wildest imagination could possibly penetrate this imperturbable force, a perversion of nature quickly shattered this once stolid state of things. It happened quite fast; one of the speedier opposition caught a member of SickPax flat on his fat belly, gave the second thought a miss and galloped off to mark their first try. No attempt was made to cut off the perpetrator. Nonetheless, it was perhaps the team’s continued composure in attack and sound defense (from that point forward), which restored the damage, to seal the final fate of SMU that day. A series of tries did follow after the atrocity, delivered and presented ceremoniously through the magical and seamless collaboration of those usual suspects from SickPax as if in a defiant reciprocation. In an interview right after: “We were simply returning the favour…we just tend to be a little bit more generous”.

ROUND 3 - SICKPAX vs THE DIRTY DOZEN
RESULT – CRASH, BOOM, BANG!

Hailing from the halls of Kent Ridge residences at NUS, this bunch possibly had a good shot in displacing us with their comparable expertise in Touch. Hence, it was down to a battle of wits and innate skill, which could well deliver us from annihilation. It was time to place the dozen on trial and assess the damage they were capable of. In unleashing our first few waves of attack, the Dozen’s defense policies were rigorously tested without compromise, as we directed strategical blows one after another at their stubborn walls of resilience. Holding this wall together with sheer determination was what appeared to be their captain (the one Intel informs as Laremy), who seem to be the only one who had the slightest inkling of what was going on. Each time having to brave SickPax’s siege of attacks, it always fell upon Laremy to tighten the weak holes in the middle and hold the disarrayed flanks together, which had its rewards on a few crucial occasions. SickPax then deployed one of their many offence tactics, which involved stretching the opposition’s defensive line with lateral movements of the ball, and picking out a tiny fragment of weakness with which to exploit. Alas, the resilient and defiant wall of Laremy could not withstand the collective attacking astuteness and prowess of the other dozen, which only proceeded to finish off the task at hand. The last 5 minutes or so saw the comprehensive defeat of The Great Wall of Laremy as remnants of the already battered wall, which still stood in hopeful optimism, were brought to the ground. In a comment right after: “Do The Dirty Dozen by any chance do mud-wrestling? Getting dirrrty…I laike! Getting a dozen dirrrty…I mucho laike!!”.

ROUND 4 - SICKPAX vs SMU 2
RESULT – TOTAL AND ABSOLUTE OBLIVION!

Another counterpart of the SMU brethren only as feebly menacing as the other, which we blithely sought to dispatch mercilessly. We do not recognise defeat, we do not have room for fear as we only thrive on it and embrace no warmth of emotion nor expose any wrinkle of weakness, as these are none but traits of the feeble flesh and of the subdued. We are an omen to our foes only as ominous as the mere whisper of our legacy. With that in mind, SickPax set out to obliterate SMU 2 on the first whistle to the last with no reprieve offered…we could only promise a quick death. As it turned out, SMU 2 could hardly carry out their plan which involved avenging the loss suffered by SMU 1 earlier, but instead made a mess of things and ended on the dead pile like any other team which crossed our path that day. Having slower and less skilful attributes than SMU 1 under their belt…it seems that their master plan had to be primarily crafted around Dan ‘The Man’ who flourished on slower and less experienced teams, as he would normally unleash scorching runs setting his opposite man ablaze. In an answer to the tool of the grand architecture, SickPax had their own devices to clamp down the raging Ferrari, mostly abiding by a fundamental principle of ‘closing down space’, which renders a prancing horse powerless without the boundless road to gallop. The plan worked without a hitch as the Frenchman was clearly stubbed out. Stopped in his tracks most of the time and denied the room required to muscle out all the horsepower, Dan was merely a Ferrari without the juice. With the evident loss of an attacking vantage, SMU resorted to tipping the scales back in their favour by stringing in another gumball, which had an uncanny resemblance to Aussie scrumhalf legend George “Georgie” Gregan (not to be confused with the other pansy-ass self proclaimed and created “The Legend”), but can be distinguished without the year round tan, a conscious neglect for the need of a playing strip and possessing a tendency to bitch. This was, unfortunately, a gun-to-the-head attempt for a come back, as the Bugatti Veyron they had hoped for turned out to be what might’ve as well been a sporadically spitting, spluttering, hissing Ford Anglia. Commonly termed as a “headless chicken”, Georgie-look-alike replicated his very own version of the term, mostly resembling a scuttling headless raptorial avian, cradling a touch ball as though excited at the fact of having laid an egg, which in it’s preoccupation, failed to register any sensation of a touch affected by Amila in a ‘chicken run’ spectacle. Dumb bird! And in an event no less than expected, SMU 2 was sent packing...without so much of a squawk. In a comment right after: “…obviously somebody has been taking the Gay Rooster joke more seriously than was intended”.

ROUND 5 - SICKPAX vs SP BURNERS
RESULT – GIDEON KISSED ASS WHILE WE KICKED ASS!

A close rivalry-relationship has always existed between the two teams; Khairul, a long time friend and veteran player of SickPax (SixPack) only took up the coaching responsibilities some years ago when SP boys decided to distinguish themselves with a separate identity apart from the more accepted contact version of the sport. Edmund from SP has also been seen in battle with SickPax (SixPack) in the memorable NTL 2006, as well as on a number of other occasions. Only this year, a new batch of recruits have seen themselves donning the colours of the team, making their debut in the STL 2007, and have been drafted nothing less than but from the same pool of talent. Even the common faces of SickPax (SixPack) such as Adam, David and some say The Shadow can claim SP as their alma mater. Always a pleasant and learning struggle, these two teams have different agendas whenever eyes are set on the common prize; Sixpack: To keep the unbroken record of wins against SP. SP Burners: To bide their time before finally beating SixPack and making history. It will be a match to shed some light on some burning questions; Has Khairul been effective in imparting his knowledge in preparing them for the big crunch and will he observe any quarter when his softer side emerges? How about the boys from SixPack playing for their school? Just how much knowledge have they managed to tap from the benefit of training with SixPack over the STL 2007 period? That leaves the defending champions, SixPack. Will they truly hold their ground against a faster and possibly fitter team who has been but train together since the beginning? The answers soon unfurled over the next 15 minutes…

The ***verdict?

And in the short span of 15 minutes, it was 4-2 in favour of SickPax!

Record remains unbroken with SickPax trouncing their opposition once again.
Khairul will have to reflect on the loss and rethink a new strategy for the next meeting. In the meantime, he will celebrate with SickPax on the victory and be consoled by his girlfriend.
The SP boys will need to be more attentive during SixPack practices and apply the knowledge within the context of playing similiar super teams.
SickPax (SixPack) still reigns as the team with the best-looking fellas.

Acknowledgement: To those who made it despite how unreasonably early it was, and to those who made it happen by assembling the team and administrating the registration. To Derelyn who agreed to slug it out at the prospect of playing 3 categories that day, and mainly for just "making up the numbers on the field" as you so put it. To our mascot cum cheerleader cum supporter, Gideon for kicking it real...chic! You probably represent a beacon of hope to some random 10 year old boy who lies about going to rugby practice when he is actually going for knitting classes and reads CLEO with a flashlight under the bed covers. To the fans and spectators, for sticking around and believing in us. To those we have so gracefully and fashionably beaten...SMILE, you've been beaten by the best! To those I forgot to mention...well, you are clearly not of any significance to have been noticed or remembered, so do something already. And lastly to the haters...go f*** yourselves!

Overall it was a fun filled morning till the end, which would still have been the case even if an alternative result were to be the eventual by-product. Win or Loose, we will booze! The objectives we had set out to achieve, such as establishing an understanding with some of the new players as well as reviving the old magic with the old players, which are just as important, and have by and large been fulfilled to some reasonable extent. Basically, stay together, keep evolving and improving and we’ll see each other at the end of the tunnel…immortality, take it, it’s yours!

***SixPack would like to apologise for loss of the live feed to the SixPack Media & Broadcasting Station from the playing field in relation to match number 5: SickPax vs SP Burners @ GMT+8 1240hrs. SixPack also regrets to inform the fans that a repeat telecast will not be available as there appeared to be a sexual assault on the cameraman and hence no footage was retained as a result of the scuffle. Unfortunately, the victim was under the influence of a hallucinatory drug, impairing his vision and perception, and thus no vivid description can be offered. Although the assailant could not be identified thoroughly, from fragmented accounts related by the victim, the assailant was thought to have worn cheap 5 dollar shades, had scotch breath, was decked in blue and white, standing just over 5 feet, and wearing a cap with a pre-frayed brim. The public is encouraged to come forward with any information pertaining to this incident. A report can be made in person at any police center or calls can also be directed to the CrimeWatch hotline 1800-BRORAPE-0000.

A farmer goes out one day and buys a brand new stud rooster for his chickencoop.

The rooster struts over to the old rooster and says, "OK, old fart, time to retire."

The old rooster replies, "Come on, you can't handle ALL these chickens. Lookwhat it's done to me. Can't you just let me have the two old hens over in the corner?"

The young rooster says, "Beat it! You're washed up and I'm taking over." The old rooster says "I'll tell you what, young stud, I'll race you around the farmhouse. Whoever wins gets exclusive domain over the entire chicken coop."

The old rooster takes off running. About 15 seconds later the young rooster takes off after him. They round the front of the farmhouse and the young rooster has closed the gap. STL 06 was 6 packs fledgling competition. A band of brothers brought together by the love of getting an egg shaped ball over a chalk line. It turned out to be a humbling experience. After loosing out to Pukeko and Bro-Town in league games the 6 pack machine choked in the 3rd vs 4th place playoff suffering a humiliating defeat to Bucks.

The 07 experience proved equally as humbling. Sometimes it’s hard to convince myself of the team’s successes between the summers with NTL a distant memory. Teams, like Leander’s fine wines, should improve over time so why haven’t we?

It could be argued we are a different team from NTL 06. True, we have lost some very influential players through National Service, marriage and the overpowering temptation of hairy arm pitted Taiwanese girls. However, in defence, a solid core has remained with new players drafted to fill the shoes of friends who have left. It could also be said 6 pack has suffered due to individuals contact commitments and the exam season. This is true yet unavoidable. Our team is defined by its ability to cover for members who have made equally large commitments in other areas of their lives. Regardless, the squad retains the ability to field proficient players with the potential to soundly beat our rivals any given Saturday.

The real difference is the space between our ears. Mentally we are not as fit as 6 months ago. We aspire to play every STL game with the flow displayed in NTL without maintaining the same training intensity. Obviously we fall short, frustrations arise and scapegoats needed to take the blame. Players take it upon themselves to amend our fortunes by attempting to fashion solo tries out of null opportunities breaking the flow and amassing frustrations in the process.

The pride for our team makes the ensuing backlash all the more bitter. If only our contempt remained on the sidelines. Instead mass emails fill inboxes, each disapproving sentence chipping away at already fragile morale. Ultimately we are left disillusioned, unhappy with our performances and overall standing in the league.

As highlighted after round one UWC-Bucks along with the ever dangerous, Pukeko lads would be challenging us for the title. The games against these two teams would make or break our season yet we failed to comprehend this simple fact. Unbelievably basic attendance and punctuality crippled the team even before the first touch had been made in two of these games. As a team we are notoriously slow to adapt to game tempo and generally only get going by the second half. So understand, key games start midday on the Friday, by confirming attendance, making sure you're fuelled up, hydrated, rested, then up and out with all your gear for the warm up.

However without a doubt and above all else Leander’s injury was the worst outcome of STL. The impact of having the team backbone ripped out is obvious to all and I’m positive this memoir along with our position in the league would be different had it never occurred.

Its not all bad and there is nothing here we as a team can’t fix including Leander’s knee. We’ve got a great bunch of committed new lads who are either dedicated to training or trying to get the attention of coyotes. One of the highlights of STL 07 was Edwin’s and then Derrick’s performance in the first and second UWC-Bucks games respectively. The first half 10-0 demolition of a particularly irritating SSSV6 team was extremely satisfying as was the second half, 5 try fight back against UWC-Bucks and never say die attitude in the second Pukeko game. 6 pack also has the leagues best defence and MVP in Adam.

A successful 6 pack is full of happy 6 packers. So with the league over and the pressure off lets use the forthcoming competitions to bring back the pleasure of playing for each other. Individually we need to return to the NTL way of thinking “how best can I generate a opportunity for my team to exploit,” and not “I wonder if I can burn / step that guy.”

I hope in a few months time 6 pack NTL results will put a smile on my face while I’m freezing my ass off in the paradise that is Wigan.

Play of the Day: One set of sharp fly defending in the 2nd half, against a King’s punch-up which gained them only 3m, using 2 touches, followed satisfyingly by a turnover.
