Lessons from Oasis 06
An old rugby coach once told me, "you never really loose from a defeat providing you learn from it," If everyone took something positive from Oasis 06 that will make you stronger in the future then we didn’t loose anything. In retrospect it was a hard weekend. Being drawn in the larger pool in the mens category along with a tough mixed pool and half the team being drafted to referee was physically and mentally exhausting. These are not excuses being highlighted. Instead I’m proud that no one moaned or complained and everyone played until they literally broke themselves. In the last two games we were dropping like flies, subbing off only stretch out a cramp before going in to replace a teammate with the same problem. A fond memory for me will be Sujan motioning for me to stay down after suffering a bad calf cramp during the mixed final while he and the team covered for me. It’s a great feeling to know someone’s got your back but its an even better feeling knowing you’ve got someone else’s.
We didn’t keep our clean sheet and we didn’t win Oasis but we lost to a skillful team who flew in New Zealand ringers to beat us. It’s good to hear how disappointed everyone is in loosing; it demonstrates how much pride is on the line each time we play. Defeat is bitter but it emphasizes how sweet victories are. In the grand scheme of things we need teams like Wanderers and Bro-town to up the anti so we in turn improve. Playing touch just wouldn’t be as fun if we won every game by 5 tries, we need the prospect of difficult games and potential defeat to keep up the pressure and maintain our focus. Personally I prefer begin the underdog again.
A lot has been said in the aftermath of Oasis about what could have been if we’d prepared as hard for the tournament as we did for NTL. For NTL the team made sacrifices to squeeze in 3 sessions a week, no more so than Leander. The NTL training paid off, the result being history. I think this one photo sums up the effort put in vs. reward gained. For most the feeling of winning is “jubilation” but for the one guy who made it all happen the feeling is just relief at a job well done. Similarly the same guy will find defeat particularly irritating.
Oasis was always going to be difficult for us. 6 pack is a young team the majority of members are still studying. As such our numbers will always suffer during the exam period but it’s a small price to pay to maintain such a young damn good-looking bunch of players.
So to summaries;
Learn something from defeat
6 pack needs a nemesis (of sorts)
Effort = reward
The team needs to take some of the burden off the captain’s shoulders
We are good looking

Conquering Muscle Cramps
A muscle cramp, technically, occurs when your muscle tightens and shortens causing a sudden severe pain. Muscle cramps generally result from overexertion and dehydration. When you don't have enough fluid in your system, it leads to an electrolyte imbalance that causes your muscles to cramp up. Electrolytes are minerals such as sodium, magnesium, calcium and potassium that help the cells to function normally. An imbalance occurs when we have too much or too little of one or more electrolytes in our system. The main electrolytes affecting muscle cramping are potassium, sodium and calcium.
Cramps may also occur after inactivity, such as sitting too long in one place without moving a muscle. Sometimes you can even get a cramp when you're just lying in bed, though researchers cannot define a cause.
Most often people get cramps in their calves, however, you can also get them in your thighs, feet or just about any muscle. Cramps can be eased by a few simple methods. First, relax the tightened area. You should gently massaging the area that's cramped, whether it's a crick in your calf from over exercising or a spasm in your feet. Second, stretch the muscle out slowly and gently, as long as you don't feel pain. For calf cramps, do a wall stretch. Stand about three feet away from the wall, with your knees straight and your heels on the floor. Lean into the wall, supporting yourself with your hands. You will feel the stretch of your calf muscles. Hold for 60 seconds and repeat three times.
You should also make sure to drink plenty of fluids. If you get muscle cramps after exercise, drink water or a sports drink or juice to rehydrate and restore your electrolyte balance. Most of the time water will be sufficient to rehydrate you, however, you are then better off choosing a sports drink containing electrolytes.
You may also undo a cramp with ice. Ice is both a pain reliever and an anti-inflammatory. Try massaging the area with ice for no more than ten minutes or until the area is bright red, which indicates that blood cells have returned to heat the cramped muscle. If ice is too uncomfortable, try heat. Heat improves superficial blood circulation and makes muscles more flexible, so some people find that heat is more soothing for muscle cramps than ice. Try a heating pad for 20 minutes at a time or even a warm shower or bath. Make sure to massage the muscle with your hands following ice or heat.

For Honour & Glory (Oasis Carnival)
Sons of Lankan, of Wigan, M'sian, S'porean, my brothers.
I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me.
A day may come when the courage of men fails,
when we forsake our friends
and break all bonds of fellowship,
but it is NOT this day !!!!!!!
An hour of woes and shattered heads,
when the legacy of 6-pack comes crashing down,
but it is NOT this day!!!!
This day we play & FIGHT !!!!!
By all that you hold dear on this good Field,
I bid you *charge, Men of the 6-pack!!!!*
