The 6-pack Chronicle

Every team has a beginning.
As much as we should be interested in
the present
and the future,
we ought to know of our past and how this team came about.

Anyway, 6-pack almost did not happen at all due to financing difficulties but thanx to the SRC Ladies Captain, Mingli, who came to the rescue and toiled hard to find the funding for this team to exist. Therefore, we owe the Ladies a big gratitute. Should there come a time when our assistance is rendered (be it a fun-raising or rugby event), please kindly help them up for it is no small feat to raise the amount of $880

The Beginning:
The team started with a humble 6-8 guys playing in the mixed SRC team. For a virgin mixed touch team, we did extremely well, running through every oppo and securing no less than a 2nd place, behind one of the most dominating team in the National Touch League.

The idea of a Men's team came about right after the NTL league itself. For the guys to get as much exposure as the ladies and increase the playing standard/experience, we need to have a Men's Team in the League. Furthermore, it is about time that Wanderers' dominance at all categories must be ended. And with their players aging at a rapid rate, the takeover must be done soon before they have any excuses of being old and out of 'touch'. Plus, the SRC ladies could use a sparring team during training.

Unfortunately, 6-8 guys shrank to 5..... 1 left to Iraq, 1 had to teach and 1 is playing for Bucks for Men's ...

The 5
Jielun (the founder of this team) for it is him who called ppl up and get me interested in playing,
Alan, who somehow finds his way to Yio Chu Kang stadium from Dover by bicycle for his 1st training, therefore no excuse to turn him down,
Xiang-junn, who was looking forward to competitive Touch or perhaps he was just looking forward to touching girls,
Dennis, who watched us in a game, was impressed by our team and decided to join up
Leander, who just wanna play

The Recruiment:
5 definitely cannot form a Men's team...so...hoping more guys would join us....
....weekly Touch Friendlies we had....

vs Republic Poly,
vs Temasek Poly,
vs Ngee Ann Poly,
vs some Indian National Team,
vs Eusoff Hall.....

...from then....
5
eventually became
11
Loo, who has been dedicatedly training together since last year,

Sujan & Amila, an inseparable pair drafted from RP,
Kenny, promising & committed young playa from RP as well,
Hairul, who has been religiously turning up for friendlies late last year , though could not promise to play all the way but gave his words to play he has been supportingly committed,
Hadi, who had the pleasure of playing against the Indian National Team and was hungry for more actions & some League domination...good lad,

we have a team

2006
the year
.After friendlies vs Bucks every Saturday
&
a Beach Touch Tournament
the 11 grew to
16
David, who almost went home coz he could not find us in Turf City and what fate it would be if he did left,
Yum Hwa, who has difficulty in joining us at first due to some domestic issue, ask him if u are "kaypoh",
Adam, who was bribed to play with the Rip Curl goodies won from Beach Touch competition,
And through some connections,
2 experienced Touch players were called forth, Khairul & Jervais

And

then

it was bornt

A team
of
16 talented players
A potential Touch Rugby Champ team in time to come
but definitely a bunch of guys who simply loves playing rugby
History in the making

Training no. 4 ( 24th Feb)

Fickle Friday, NUS field, 7pm
Training Objective: - (Refresher session. Enlighten the absentee)

Game...game....more games.....
game vs each other
game vs all nations ladies

Need more guys to turn up for training so we can play the real 6 vs 6 game situation
Hope all can improve at the same rate
Otherwise, it will be frustrating to those who have been coming down training and absorbing the game plan well
I understand everyone will have their constraint and priorities....pls voice it out, bro....will work something out...this is a Team

Here....pleading... for all to sacrifice only 3 hrs of ur weekday night time for the better of the Team

starting the Friday tradition......
The Friday's Quote:
"The resentment of criticism engenders
can demoralize friends and close mates.
And still not correct the situation
that has been condemned"
No matter what happens at tomorrow's game, do not lose your head

Training no. 3 ( 22nd Feb)

Wicked Wednesday, NUS field, 7pm
Training Objective: Attacking moves linking from the Dump

Did purely attacking moves today. Managed to sort the attacking hiccups last Saturday with a few committed bunch of Wednesday warriors.
Respect to Kenny for his commitment. Despite a partial torn knee ligament, he risked it and continued to train with us today. (such extreme action is highly not recommended though).
We wish Kenny a speedy recovery and hopefully he will be able to play 100% soon

Most Productive training so far...
In Summary we did:

1) "Normal" dump

2) "Teapot"

3) "Switch Dump"

The moves should not be fixed and rigid all the time but rather the general concept of the moves (why it creates extra man, ideal time to do it, communicating to teammates on when do to it, your line of running, etc) should be understood by everyone.......

Ended with Dinner @ Fong Seng

The dish of the day, Blackened Fish.
Waited blardeee long for it (at least 30 mins). Look how happy David is, when it arrives....

Six Pack vs Bucks Masters (18th Feb)

18th Feb, 2.30pm, Turf City
Round 1 Match Objective:
Keeping the flow in the attack (ACCOMPLISHED)
Score : 7-1
Playa of the Day: Khairul
Dick of the Day: Yum Hwa & Jielun (Tied)
Play of the Day: Hairul's blistering run, slicing through the middle for the try of the day

A solid 15 man squad turned up to represent, “the six pack of pussy burners” (6PPB) in their baptism of fire against a more experienced ViagraTM fueled “Bucks Masters” team.

This opening match of the summer League looked to be a classic encounter of age and experience V’s youth and flair. The blue and white strip of 6PPB represented no less than 5 nations and was supported by the leagues most vocal and attractive supporters.

After 5 minutes stale mate the Bucks Masters defence started to succumb to attacking pressure only for the 6PPB to become their own worst enemy. The Singaporean contingent of Jye Luen and Yum both proved myopia was alive and well as they successfully touched down for scores in the neighbouring pitch. Jye Luen (who famously attempted to score before the try line in a previous season) latched onto a pass from acting dummy half Leander only to replicate Forest Gump in running off the end of the pitch. In a carbon copy incident only minutes later Yum, eager to show on the job training isn’t his strong point, accepted a selfless pass from Leander and equaling Jye Luens knowledge of pitch geography also touched down in the dead ball zone.

Thankfully “actual” tries did follow from birthday boy Hadi,...

..Loo, Amila, and yours truly ..... but the pick of the bunch being Hairul’s second half effort as he steered himself through a gap in the weakening Bucks Masters defence with millimeter precision for an easy score.

However it wasn’t all plain sailing as the Bucks Masters side did prove that modern medicine and prosthetic joints can turn a bunch of aging ang moh’s into handy touch players. Not only did their team finish the match without any heart attacks or strokes they also managed to put 1 try passed the youthful 6PPB defence despite Dave’s best efforts at “body on the line defence.”

The match ended 7-3 to 6PPB with Khairul picking up man of the match for excellent support play and perfect execution of game plan and Jye Luen and Yum being awarded “dick of the day” for reasons stated above.

yours,
Alan "Hello Kitty" Lowton
