Six Pack vs Bucks IPA

22nd April, 2.40pm, Turf City

Round 8 Match:

Score : 6-4

Playa of the Day: Hadi (crucial 2 tries which kept 6-pack in the game)

Dick of the Day: David & Khairul (for the blunders)

Play of the Day: Yum's smug smile while teasing David for dropping the ball

Bucks IPA looked to simultaneously revenge the defect of their Bucks Masters side and replace 3rd place 6 pack in the league. For 6 pack it was a chance to return to winning ways after a two week break and confirm the 3rd place position.

The match seemed to have a promising start for 6 pack. Within the opening minute Khairul rounded his opposite man and raced away for the score. Unfortunately the lessons of contact rugby die hard as he attempted to touch down in the centre of the try zone under imaginary posts. This would have been possible but Khairul seems to have the turning circle equal to that of a lorry so he overshot the back of the pitch.

Minutes later David demonstrated that exiting the pitch was not the only way to screw up a certain try by dropping the ball over the line. The frustration amongst the team was plain to see with the exception of Yum who looked very smug at the thought of repaying months of teasing from David about his own try zone mistakes.

Ironically the deadlock was eventually broken through a dummy by Sujan who just returned from a month long break in Sri Lanka. This is how it happened as described in his own words,

“I tried to pass the ball but it didn’t leave my hands…..”

Hadi added a second 6 pack try before Bucks IPA hit back. Bucks IPA continually probed the 6 pack try line looking for gaps and weaknesses. Only some finger tip touches and Leander acrobatics kept them from scoring more than 2 tries before half-time. 6 pack had hoped to opened up a substantial half time lead before loosing Kenny, Sujan and Amila to the RP mixed game. It was left to the remaining few to dig deep.

Hadi lead by example after the break by doing a Khairul and walking the length of the pitch for a score. Buck IPA didn’t take it lying down and soon hit back leveling the game once again. Some more end-to-end action was to follow with Khairul touching down to make up for his earlier blunder only for Bucks IPA to up the anti and reply with a try of their own. 6 pack raised the stakes immediately from the restart to reestablish their one try advantage and sealed the game with another minutes before the final whistle taking the Bucks IPA scalp 6-4.

All in all a scrappy error filled game, but credit to our Bucks friends who fought tooth and nail until the end. Also a sad day for 6 pack as it was to be Loos last game due to contact commitments. Needless to say he’s welcome back anytime to brighten up our training sessions and ruffle a few French feathers during a game so keep your blue and white shirt clean!

Yours
Assie

Apologies for the lack of photos in last weeks game. Thought I’d make up for it by sharing some classic rugby footage from some of the games best, past and present.

First, 3 tries from the greatest game ever played. Barbarians vs All Black 1973. Classic footage of the Welsh contingent at Cardiff scoring a couple of great team tries.

Almost straight from kick off Gareth Edwards scores (imagine Willy Ryder with a mullet)

Training no. 19 (21st April)

After a long long break filled with.....

....7s event....
... Good Friday weekend...
...we finally got back for training

A change of venue....
....sorry, i'll get real...below is the actual venue....
...(smells a bit like Jakarta)...
....new set of flood lights...
and a new eating place (with hyperactive glucose-powered kids)
...whose parents' make wicked beverage...
...plus the balloon...

it maketh me wanna sing
so sing, i will...

"Baby's black balloon makes her fly
I almost fell into that hole in your life
And you're not thinking about tomorrow
'Cause you were the same as me
But on your knees"

after singing...I realized we didn't really get to train much
...Sadness...

It's going to be 3 v 2, with 5 in a team.

Registration is $75 per team, and comes with a goodie bag containing an event shirt as well as other good stuff. (perhaps a Bukake if we are lucky)

There'll also be free flow of RedBull and McDonald's orange juice at the carnival, and great prizes to be won!

The Singapore 7s: of Balls, Booze & Beer (part 1)

"Legend has it that Sevens was born in the Scottish town in 1883
after an internal club dispute led to the formation of a breakaway group.
Neither the old or new club had sufficient players so
the local butcher invented a seven-a-side format that allowed competition to begin"

Butcher or not....Whoever invented the 7s was brilliant !
The 7s weekend: the weekend where balls are passed fluidly and beers are distributed freely (not quite)

Saturday (08/04/2006)
Well, anyway, the 7s was off to an action-packed start. The Kiwis began the defence of their Standard Chartered Sevens Singapore title with a 26-10 victory over a battling Canadian side.

The Fiji was looking good as well as they steamrolled past Japan 54-0.

Singapore was not having their day as they were literally "owned" by the other 3 teams in the pool
The highlights on Saturday were the "Upsets".
1) Scotland stunned Argentina 19-14
2) Kenya delivered the biggest shock on Day 1 of the Standard Chartered 7s Singapore 2006 as they beat Samoa 21-19
3) France and Canada shared the spoils after a thrilling 12-12 draw

The crowd from the 1st day was so-so.
As it can be seen from the pics below, though the mood was merry and friendly, not all are well accepted

The day also saw Nemo and Flintstone frolicked on the Pitch and had to be escorted out of the stadium. Singapore, famous for its no nonsense attitude, did not get the joke from the clown fish as they put 2 coppers on the fish throughout the whole tournament to prevent anymore shenanigan...What a shame !! Boooo !!! FREE NEMO !!

The most exciting match of the day will have to be England vs Samoa as the Samoans, beaten earlier by Kenya, had to beat England to get through to the Cup Quarter-final.
The match did not disappoint as as Samoa held off England 14-12 to progress
Nevertheless, Alan did not seem to mind the defeat as he was confident where the Cup was going to end this year.
Off he went to the karaoke to sing his favourite song....

Six Pack vs Pukeko

25th March, 2.40pm, Turf City

Round 7 Match:

Score : 3-5

Playa of the Day: Alan

Dick of the Day: Loo (for the uncalled for clothesline & bickering) & Jielun (the intercepted pass)

Play of the Day: The try which scored by Alan. A switch dump move at the right wing instigated by Khairul , resulting an extra players at the other wing. A simple "hands" down the attacking line between Leander, Adam then Loo resulted in Alan with the task of beating the dog

Tension within the 6 pack camp was apparent with the Summer Touch League entering into the last few games. Today’s encounter had the potential to shake up in the top three teams and create an opening for 6 pack to become serious contenders for the number one spot. This fact seem to be well acknowledged by a larger than normal crowd that gathered to watch the show down.
Put on a show, the 6-pack did....
Sorry....I mean....this show....

As expected the opening encounters were heated as each team probed the other for signs of weakness and to test the limits of the refs patients. High tempo end to end rugby displayed in the first five minutes did not break the stale mate but it was successful in increasing the frustrations of players on each side which inturn required a couple of referee interventions. David caught a sample of this frustration splitting his lip open and going down quicker than an Orchard Tower regular.

The deadlock was broken soon after as 6 pack conceded a soft try due to miss marking in defence creating an easy 2 on 1 situation for Pukeko. A second try followed 5 minutes later for Pukeko after some heavy midfield exchanges. Amazingly the 6 pack defence failed to spot the largest touch player in the league patrolling the chalk on the touchline who rolled in for an easy score in the corner.

In a much needed boost 6 pack hit back in the first 6 touches after the restart thanks to the Pukeko defence mistakenly pre-empted a touch on Khairull who dropped over the line.

Soon after the ref felt it necessary to stamp his authority on the game and gave David 2 minutes on the side for ruck interference (I think). Strangely the 5-man defence worked better than the 6-man version and no tries were scored. However on return to 6-man status Pukeko struck twice. The first through a well work 5m switch move and the second was a gift interception minutes before halftime.

6 pack had it all to play for being 4-1 down at half time but quickly got into their step in the second half.
Pukeko were first to score again but as the duration of the game increased it played to 6 packs advantage. Thanks to all those late night sessions on the NUS playing field 6 pack had more left in the tank and fully exploited the weakening Pukeko defence thanks to tries from yours truly (despite the best interventions of a black Labrador) and a near full length sprint and score from Dave.
Unfortunately it was too little too late with the first half defensive blunders costing 6 pack the match although Loo has another theory
Who knows, 5 more minutes and it could all have been a different story but we won’t let it get us down
Apologies for the 3 week delay in this match report but the reporter contracted a bad case of writers block.

Yours, Assie!

Stain Boy

Of all the super heroes,
the strangest one by far,
doesn't have a special power,
or drive a fancy car.

next to Superman and Batman,
I guess he must seem tame.
But to me he is quite special,
and Stain Boy is his name.

He can't fly around tall buildings,
or outrun a speeding train,
the only talent he seems to have
is to leave a nasty stain.

Sometimes I know it bothers him,
that he can't run or swim or fly,
and because of this one ability,
his dry cleaning bill is sky-high.
