The Singapore 7s: of Balls, Booze & Beer (part 1)

"Legend has it that Sevens was born in the Scottish town in 1883
after an internal club dispute led to the formation of a breakaway group.
Neither the old or new club had sufficient players so
the local butcher invented a seven-a-side format that allowed competition to begin"

Butcher or not....Whoever invented the 7s was brilliant !
The 7s weekend: the weekend where balls are passed fluidly and beers are distributed freely (not quite)

Saturday (08/04/2006)
Well, anyway, the 7s was off to an action-packed start. The Kiwis began the defence of their Standard Chartered Sevens Singapore title with a 26-10 victory over a battling Canadian side.

The Fiji was looking good as well as they steamrolled past Japan 54-0.

Singapore was not having their day as they were literally "owned" by the other 3 teams in the pool
The highlights on Saturday were the "Upsets".
1) Scotland stunned Argentina 19-14
2) Kenya delivered the biggest shock on Day 1 of the Standard Chartered 7s Singapore 2006 as they beat Samoa 21-19
3) France and Canada shared the spoils after a thrilling 12-12 draw

The crowd from the 1st day was so-so.
As it can be seen from the pics below, though the mood was merry and friendly, not all are well accepted

The day also saw Nemo and Flintstone frolicked on the Pitch and had to be escorted out of the stadium. Singapore, famous for its no nonsense attitude, did not get the joke from the clown fish as they put 2 coppers on the fish throughout the whole tournament to prevent anymore shenanigan...What a shame !! Boooo !!! FREE NEMO !!

The most exciting match of the day will have to be England vs Samoa as the Samoans, beaten earlier by Kenya, had to beat England to get through to the Cup Quarter-final.
The match did not disappoint as as Samoa held off England 14-12 to progress
Nevertheless, Alan did not seem to mind the defeat as he was confident where the Cup was going to end this year.
Off he went to the karaoke to sing his favourite song....
