Six Pack vs Pukeko

25th March, 2.40pm, Turf City

Round 7 Match:

Score : 3-5

Playa of the Day: Alan

Dick of the Day: Loo (for the uncalled for clothesline & bickering) & Jielun (the intercepted pass)

Play of the Day: The try which scored by Alan. A switch dump move at the right wing instigated by Khairul , resulting an extra players at the other wing. A simple "hands" down the attacking line between Leander, Adam then Loo resulted in Alan with the task of beating the dog

Tension within the 6 pack camp was apparent with the Summer Touch League entering into the last few games. Today’s encounter had the potential to shake up in the top three teams and create an opening for 6 pack to become serious contenders for the number one spot. This fact seem to be well acknowledged by a larger than normal crowd that gathered to watch the show down.
Put on a show, the 6-pack did....
Sorry....I mean....this show....

As expected the opening encounters were heated as each team probed the other for signs of weakness and to test the limits of the refs patients. High tempo end to end rugby displayed in the first five minutes did not break the stale mate but it was successful in increasing the frustrations of players on each side which inturn required a couple of referee interventions. David caught a sample of this frustration splitting his lip open and going down quicker than an Orchard Tower regular.

The deadlock was broken soon after as 6 pack conceded a soft try due to miss marking in defence creating an easy 2 on 1 situation for Pukeko. A second try followed 5 minutes later for Pukeko after some heavy midfield exchanges. Amazingly the 6 pack defence failed to spot the largest touch player in the league patrolling the chalk on the touchline who rolled in for an easy score in the corner.

In a much needed boost 6 pack hit back in the first 6 touches after the restart thanks to the Pukeko defence mistakenly pre-empted a touch on Khairull who dropped over the line.

Soon after the ref felt it necessary to stamp his authority on the game and gave David 2 minutes on the side for ruck interference (I think). Strangely the 5-man defence worked better than the 6-man version and no tries were scored. However on return to 6-man status Pukeko struck twice. The first through a well work 5m switch move and the second was a gift interception minutes before halftime.

6 pack had it all to play for being 4-1 down at half time but quickly got into their step in the second half.
Pukeko were first to score again but as the duration of the game increased it played to 6 packs advantage. Thanks to all those late night sessions on the NUS playing field 6 pack had more left in the tank and fully exploited the weakening Pukeko defence thanks to tries from yours truly (despite the best interventions of a black Labrador) and a near full length sprint and score from Dave.
Unfortunately it was too little too late with the first half defensive blunders costing 6 pack the match although Loo has another theory
Who knows, 5 more minutes and it could all have been a different story but we won’t let it get us down
Apologies for the 3 week delay in this match report but the reporter contracted a bad case of writers block.

Yours, Assie!
