Finally!! The long awaited match up between the undefeated champions of the local touch scene- The Wanderers versus the young upstarts and the latest talk of the town- Singapore Recreation Club. The long build up to the finals saw SRC defeating the Wanderers by a narrow one try during the preliminaries and the experienced reigning champs looks eager to avenge their loss. As the crowd builds up on the sideline on a slightly overcast day, little did they know that they were about to witness history in the making.

1st Half
SRC wearing blue and yellow gets the kick-off and within the first minute, Adam breaks through as a dummy half and makes a pass at the try line but Leander and Mali collides in a vain attempt to score. Wanderers in red and black, hits back immediately by making slick passes and good hands, showing a hint of things to come. In defiance, ‘Hatchet Man’ Adam, started to impose his authority on the game, by taking it out on an opponent, the revealing his simple but brutal tactic.

Wanderers draws first blood in the 4th minute with the French player no. 16, did a quick step, jinxed and made a dive from the 5 metre line to score between Alan and Angela. A lovely individual show of talent from the opposing no. 16 who will certainly trouble the SRC team in this match. Meanwhile, the opposition shooting defence appears to be troubling the SRC players as they found it hard to get into their usual flowing and aggressive dumping pattern.

The SRC girls executed a ‘teapot’ play with Boo, Mingli and Wendy almost broke through the Reds defence but Wendy was just caught from the back. On the other wing, our boys did the same trademark move again but were just let down by the final pass from David. (we have to say we were shocked by his sissy dive pass)

Frenchie scores once again on the 13th minute with Sujan showing that he needs to lose some weight off his ass as he almost made the touch but still got skinned on the wing. Score now stands at 2-nil to the Wanderers, as SRC players were just starting to look a little out of the game.

And at last! The Rojaks answered back with a try on the 16th min after a DJ from Leander and Amila, a quick dump, a missed touch and a lovely pass from the boys’ captain set up Ming Li for our first try. With spirits uplifted again from the team in blue, you know that a crucial game was on when you see Amila diving to make touches, good on you mate!

The first half ends at the score of 2 to 1 to the Wanderers and halftime was a critical moment for Coach Carmel to whip up the team and instil the fighting spirit into the Rojaks. Having said that, team heckler Gideon added the extra motivation of promising a beer for every try scored for the try scorer and the boys were alive once again.

2nd Half
The second period saw a renewed SRC team with Leander breaking through the defence from a DJ and David almost scored a slam dunk try only to get touch at the last moment. ‘Hatchet man’ Adam smelt blood and furious with rage, he vents it out on the Wanderers team as he takes out one of the poor girls and almost chops off her legs.

On the 3rd minute, after 4 sets of touches on the Wanderers try line, the constant pressure from SRC finally cracks the defence off the selfless running and dumping from Boo, allowing David to break through and he passes to ‘The Stallion’ to equal the score, Try! And the score stands now at two all.
In one of the fan worthy moments of the game saw Angel coming to attention in the 5th minute and raising her hands like one of her eager students in her class to signal a touch. The game soon comes to a grinding stalemate for the next 10 minutes as both teams start to probe at the other defence, waiting for a mistake to be made. And it was the team in red almost scored with one of the girls breaking through the Rojaks but thankfully, Adam made the touch on the five metre line, yelling “NOT IN MY YARD BIATCH!!”
As the clock ticks down and the players starting to tired, SRC struck on the 17th minute off a dump and split and a flop pass from David to the Sri Lankan warrior, Amila!, to score. 3-2! Finally after all the selfish plays from the self proclaimed ‘The Great One’, he made it up with those two fine assist. However, was that going to be enough to take the championship, the Rojaks wondered?
Alas it was not to be as Wanderers answered back immediately on the 18th minutes off a defensive error that has been worked on for the LAST 6 MONTHS!! And the Reds level the score to make it 3-3 as the game draws to the end of normal time.
Sudden death
The SRC Rojaks had to regain composure quickly as they knew that the game was almost in the bag and now they had to claw it back for the sake of the fans, the team and most importantly to secure toilet facilities for next season!

Its sudden death and each team having drop a player to make it 5 on 5 with SRC perform the kickoff. Wanderers gain possession, drives up the field and out of nowhere, one of the Reds broke on the wing as Angela and David chases down the player who managed to release a pass to one of his teammates. As everyone was about to cringe in view of the impending try, our ‘Ang Moh’, made a Lontong special and sprint to make the try saving touch! Thank you, you beautiful white boy you!

Having possession, SRC started off with a drive to get out of their half and as the Reds expected a usual punch up, ‘The Stallion’ thought otherwise. Leander gets the ball and he checks to look up and as quick as a flash, sidesteps the opposite player rushing up and sprints to the wings, he draws in the opposing winger and releases an inch perfect pass to David for SRC to be crowned the new Mixed Touch Champions!
As the sidelines erupted in ecstatic euphoria, history was made as the reigning champions were finally defeated and a new touch champions emerged. Will this be the start of many more trophies to come? Will this be the dawn of a brand new era for SRC to dominate the touch scene? Question remains but only time will tell….
